A sweet story with important messages.
Joe is playing pirates on the playground. When other kids see him, all they want to talk about is that he has one leg. Joe does his best to answer their questions, but really just wants to get back to his game.
A great representation of disabled people being more than their disability and not just teachable moments for others. Loved the message that you don’t “need” to know what happened to someone or the specifics of their disability in order to be kind to them, get to know them, and become friends. Relatable for those with disabilities who have experienced frustration at the invasive curiosity of others and a great resource for discussing disabilities with non-disabled children.
Beautiful illustrations filled with imagination. Nice representations of different emotions such as surprise, confusion, frustration, anger, and happiness.
Includes a note at the end with tips on how to handle children’s curiosity in an empathetic and understanding way.
Such a great read filled with humor, imagination, empathy, and friendship.
