I received a copy of this book through Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. So I’m going to be real, at first I really could not identify with this book. Marin’s words were beautiful and her experience was tragic, but it didn’t really seem to be going anywhere. (Also, not going to lie, being completely alone in a dorm sounds amazing.) I loved her literary references, but she was so wrapped up in her own head that it was difficult to connect with her.
But as the story developed and more is revealed about Marin’s past, the story was so beautiful and heartbreaking. The characters felt so real. The pain felt real. It was an amazing experience. The reader is able to connect with Marin’s past and watch her transformation through various experiences. I love the complexity of this story.
It is a fairly quick read, but there is so much real human emotion packed into its pages. It’s about love and lose, pain and acceptance, family and friendship. And although it contains a chapter that is only one sentence long, it is one of the most heartbreaking and powerful sentences I have read.
A superb books.
