Fantastic!
I have heard a lot of good thing about this comic and it really lived up to all of my expectations.
I have a soft spot for DeConnick, because Pretty Deadly was what got me into reading comics, and this is a great continuation of her work. The storyline is intriguing, although a bit confusing in the first comic, and I love the characters. I also love the diversity of the characters in race, personality, and bodies. I am so tired of comics where it is hard to tell the stick-thin females apart. But this comic does a great job of showing various body types, some thin, some fat, and a bunch in between. I also like the little details in the book, like the stats of each woman, which includes their weights. I have always hated hearing fictional women’s weights as rarely over 120 pounds as if this is the maximum a woman could possibly weigh. This book has all types of bodies, not just thin ones, and it demonstrates some great body positivity. I absolutely loved Penny’s character and was so glad that there was a whole comic dedicated to her story.
The offenses of the characters were also interesting (Emotional Manipulation, Patrilineal Dishonor, Repeated Citation for Aesthetic Offenses, Trisomy 21, Wanton Obesity). I like the way this book uses a dystopian society to call out some of the ways we police women’s bodies in the real world and the way women’s bodies interact with the spaces they inhabit.
This book is for mature readers as there is violent images and nudity.
I cannot wait for the next volume. This is an amazing start to what I am sure will be an amazing series!
