Hmmmm… weird. Yup, that about sums it up. Definitely not what I was expecting. I think part of the problem with this book is that is was marketed as much funnier than it turned out to be. With lines like “man-sized baby kitten” and “Yes, their son is OMG so cute” in the summary, I was hoping for a little more in-your-face-humor. Instead, the narrative mirrors Kafka’s not-so-funny writing, adding pointed jabs at said not-so-funny writing along the way. Throughout most of the book any reference to ‘insect’ was replaced with ‘cat’, a clever play on the translation of Ungeziefer, but really that’s where the cleverness ended. A dull re-write that was more confusing than entertaining. Although I am now haunted by images of man-cat hybrids, so it has that going for it.
