While I enjoy the Boss Baby TV show, this book was just okay for me. It’s not really a story, more of a list of ways to be a “boss”. Some of these are funny (more from an adult standpoint), but it’s not very interesting. Also, this is classified as a Level One book, which seems like a stretch for me. Level One is listed as “easy sight words and words to sound out”, “simple plot and dialogue”, and “familiar topics and themes”. In the show, Boss Baby uses a lot of unfamiliar words, because that’s the point, he’s more boss than baby. He’s more grown up than his older brother. But in a Level One book, it just doesn’t work. Words like “advantage”, “wisely”, and “congratulations” seem like a stretch for a Level One book. Also, I think a lot of the jokes would go over kids heads. What kid knows what room service is or about having “drinks” (milk bottles) at meetings? Seems a little advanced to me. This doesn’t make it a bad book, but I think it was a mistake to label it Level One, it’s kind of misleading. Anyway, this book was just okay. Cute illustrations, but I wasn’t a fan of the text. |
