I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I liked the film Coco well enough, but it’s not one of my favorites. I picked this book up at the library to read with one of the kids I work with (who really enjoys the film).

This was a great story. A wonderful and entertaining way to learn about the history of alebrijes as well as Dia de los Muertos. Pixar took some liberties in the film on the roles that alebrijes play in Mexican culture, but this book does a nice job giving a short overview of what they are and how they came about. Roni Capin Rivera-Ashford and Aaron Rivera-Ashford are a great mother-son team and did an awesome job on this book.

Nice story about family and creativity. The illustrations are also fantastic. I really enjoyed Ricardo De Los Angeles’ style.
