So I made the mistake of reading this one after having watched the first season of the Netflix show, not realizing that the show was based on the first two books (I read the first volume before watching the show). Therefore, I feel that my review may be a bit skewed. This one just didn’t do it for me. Unlike the first one, it felt sort of aimless. Everything was just happening without a real connected plot. By the end of the book, I didn’t feel like I really got anywhere, just kind of going along with things. seeing where I landed. The violence and gore that had me a little hesitant in the first book just felt like it was trying too hard in this one. It was all about the shock factor without any real significance. Plus, it all pretty much focuses on the male characters. While I have a soft spot for The Seance, I was sad to see that the women in the book didn’t get to do much. After the incident with Rumor in the first book, I was unsure how her character would be, but her literal lack of voice in the second book really sent the whole thing downhill. She is by far one of the best and most interesting characters, yet she has so few scenes and appears to only be around to advance the male characters’ stories. A real disappointment for such a strong character. As I said before, my opinion is probably skewed from having watched the show before realizing that some of the events/characters in this book were mushed in. But I just didn’t get anything out of this one. It felt aimless, overly violent, and lacked a cohesive story. Not a fan of this one. Goodreads |
