This book was absolutely fantastic. It’s basically all of my favorite things. Creative fairy tale retelling? Check. Zombies and other slightly spooky things? Check. A ton of grammar/spelling puns and word play? Check check check check check. Such a hilariously awesome read.
Going into it, I wasn’t sure how “scary” it would book. “Hilarious scarytales” is a difficult term to figure out. For me, it was the perfect amount of scary. It was nice for a little creepiness, but I didn’t have to sleep with the light on (but the closet door always remains firmly shut). The story isn’t really scary or gory, it’s more silly and gross in terms of bodily functions. It’s appropriate for young readers as long as they’re alright with the presence of zombies and vampires.
The narrations was hysterical. I loved all of the word play and breaking of the forth wall. The illustrations were fun and the font choices really worked with the story.
When I saw this was available at the library, I thought, “Do I really need to read another fairy tale retelling?” The mature answer was no, but I got it anyway. And I am so glad I did. This book is funny, creative, unique, and entertaining. One of the best fairy tale retellings I have read (which is saying a lot, because it’s kind of my thing).
Highly recommend.
