Okay read. I listened to the audiobook on a car ride. I think actually reading as opposed to listening to it may have been better for me, because I just can’t take it seriously when grown men try to read in children’s voices. It always sounds kind of cheesy to me.
The real problem I had with this one is that there wasn’t much actual story. There is a ton a gruesome descriptions, but all of the gore seems like a lazy attempt to overcompensate for the lack of plot or an interesting premise. I didn’t find it suspenseful, scary, or really that interesting. It was just a bunch of gross things happening in a field somewhere.
I recently read Bird Box and had the same problem in that POSSIBLE SPOILER:
you don’t really get answers about why this strange stuff is happening, how it all started, or what is going on in detail. It’s just a creepy field and a mysterious rock. For me, these stories lack a certain creativity in not coming up with a reason for things. They just describe weird things without any actual story. END POSSIBLE SPOILER
A good fit for anyone looking for a short read that is very gory. Not much story-wise, but definitely has a lot of disgusting descriptions.
