Fast-paced, action-packed historical fiction centering around the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.
The earthquake itself happens fairly quickly. There are some interesting facts surrounding earthquakes in the text, but much of the story deals with Leo’s life before the disaster and the resulting fires following the quake. It does contain some useful information on surviving and navigating through fire (stay low, cover face). At the end of the book is additional information on earthquakes.
I did enjoy the details from the time period that are worked into the story. Tarshis does a great job setting the scene and giving her characters backstories and their own personalities (I absolutely loved Morris!).
As with the previous book I’ve read, this one ends on a hopeful note, emphasizing friendship and its role in survival. An interesting read to help young readers learn about the event and get them interested in history. It is a bit light on earthquake facts for those looking to incorporate it into teaching plans. The story deals much more with fire than earthquakes. Still, a very good read.
