Action, adventure, fantasy, and humor collide in this middle grade novel perfect for fans of Lemony Snicket looking for some magic and fairies.

Told by a begrudging narrator, the story follows Shade, a book-loving sprite, who, after an unfortunate incident with some fireworks, must search for a new home and in the process, find where she truly belongs.

Such a fun read. I really enjoyed meeting all the characters and adventuring through Elfame. The plot is fairly low stakes but adds tension through various encounters throughout Shade’s travels from gentleman trolls to vengeful elves.

I really enjoyed Etter’s writing style. Well-constructed with plenty of humor. I especially enjoyed all of the witty fantasy book titles such as Meager Expectations, Pride and Pixies, Good Governess Jane, and The Bobcat, the Prestidigitator, and the Armoire.

Works in nice themes about friendship, doing the right thing, and not judging others by their appearance.

Clever and silly and a whole lot of fun. A great read for fantasy-loving children and adults alike.

It was so fun to journey through Elfame and I’m looking forward to continuing the adventure in the next book.
