A graphic novel featuring cheerleading and LGBTQIA+ leads? Yes, please!
A charming story about reconnecting, speaking out, and trying new things. Loved the emphasis on second chances and growing as individuals.
Despite the short length, a lot of issues are packed into this wonderful graphic novel. School pressure, unrequited crushes, fitting in, and gaining independence along with a variety of experiences related to gender-identity.
This was such a great book in delving deeper into issues trans people and other LGBTQIA+ youth may face, including transphobia and discrimination, microaggressions, well-meaning parents and friends, and being fetishized as a trans person. There is quite a range of acceptance levels in the book and I loved that Bebe had some very supportive people in her life.
One aspect I especially enjoyed was Bebe standing up to her allies and making them aware of what was actually helpful for her. Great messages about listening to what a person actually needs as well as letting your support system know how you do and do not want to be supported. This is such an important message and it was so heartwarming to see Bebe establish her voice.
Such great depth to the main characters. I instantly connected with them and loved how much they each grew even in such a short book. This story is so sweet.
On top of all that, the artwork is adorable. Great color and detail. It really brings all the components of the story together.
What a fantastic read. I want a prequel and a sequel and more from Fraiser and Wise as a team. They created such a wonderful book.
