Overall, I thought this was a good read. I have not seen the musical yet, but I stumbled across the book at the library and wanted to see what it was about.

While the subject matter can be pretty controversial, the story itself was interesting and had some very good themes and messages.

As I read this, I also listened to the soundtrack to get a better feel for the music, because reading lyrics is rather awkward if you’ve never heard the song. For me, the music was just okay. There weren’t any songs that I really liked although some had clever lyrics and nice messages. I just don’t think there were any songs that really stood out to me or that I connected with. The music wasn’t bad, just nothing I got too excited for.

Because I haven’t seen the musical yet, I don’t want to be too critical of this book. There are things that come across in live performance that just doesn’t translate to words on a page. This book was good and I will probably go see the musical after reading it, but it’s not necessarily something I am rushing to see. Nicely written with important messages, I just didn’t really connect to it that much.
