A fantastic collection of fairy tales in the form of comics.
The book features various tales, from big ones from the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault to lesser known ones such as “The Small Tooth Dog”. I really enjoyed the various interpretations of the original tales.
My favorite was Raina Telgemeier’s “Rapunzel”. Great retelling, hilarious dialogue, and wonderful drawings, this is such a great story. I don’t even like the (original) story of Rapunzel very much, but this retelling made me enjoy it. I also enjoyed Graham Annable’s “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. It contains no narration or spoken dialogue, but manages to keep the reader entertained anyway.
I also liked that each story is told from a different artist with their own unique style. This is a great way for kids to learn what styles they are most drawn to in comics. Also, it is just really entertaining to go from one style to the next. Each one is so unique and different.
For the most part, this book is kid-friendly. There is nothing gory, but as they are retellings of really old stories, some of them have their dark moments (the fate of Snow White’s stepmother).
Overall, a great collection of fairy tales for kids. A wonderful book to help nurture a love of comics and fairy tales, both of which I love. Great read.
