A hilarious and heartwarming coming of age tale about figuring out your identity. At her old school, Huda was “the hijabi girl”. But when her family moves to a new town, she’s no longer the only one wearing hijab. She must come to terms with her identity issues and learn who she truly is.
As with Fahmy’s other books, this one it hilarious. I really enjoy her humor. The illustrations were fun and engaging. The story deals with issues of meeting parent expectations, making friends, schoolwork, religion, family and sibling drama, rejection, standing up for yourself, and fitting in. Relatable and entertaining.
While there is great humor in this book, Fahmy also touches on some tough topics such as Islamophobia and microaggressions as well as internalized self-hatred. Her balance of humor and tone comes through nicely, getting her messages across in a relatable way.
A fantastic read focusing on acceptance and identity. Humorous while still tackling important issues.
