Initially I wasn’t sure about this based on the title, but it was pleasantly sweet. Hiroki’s mother is pretty sure her son is gay. His various slipups seem to confirm her suspicions. Through it all, she is caring, accepting, and patient with him, always letting him know that she is there for him no matter what.
This book was so adorable. I love that Hiroki’s mom doesn’t rush him or try to push him to share something he’s not ready to. Instead, she gives him time to figure things out and share details when he’s ready.
The family dynamics were really interesting. The father who’s always working. The mom who has her suspicions. And the brother who’s kind of just doing his own thing but is supportive of his brother.
The humor was also really fun. The joke isn’t whether Hiroki is gay or not, but rather that he’s such a bad liar.
Nice art style. Hiroki’s reactions are so adorable. A silly and feel-good slice-of-life adventure. Will definitely be reading the second volume.
