A fascinating superhero origin story steeped in Nigerian culture and lore.

After the murder of his father, the chief of police, Nnamdi vows to avenge his death. The means to actualize that vow come with a powerful artifact, an ikenga, which gives him unparalleled abilities. Will revenge settle Nnamdi’s restlessness or is the world is more complicated than he initially thought?

A great tale of friendship, grief, and the complicated line between “good” and “evil”.

Well told with a lot of interesting elements at work. I liked that Okoraforlkenga didn’t make this a standard revenge story and that there are other pieces at work in Nnamdi’s journey. It shows that the world isn’t quite so clear-cut. Nnamdi also must face his own motives and anger as he learns to control his new powers.

There are some difficult issues touched on this story such as police corruption, gun violence, a kidnapping ring, and physical violence. It doesn’t shy away from some of the corruption and crime in Nigeria while also showcasing day to day life, customs, and culture.

I especially enjoyed Nnamdi’s friendship with Chioma. They make a great crime-fighting team.

Great blend of action and emotional reflection.
