A lovely picture book packed with historical trailblazers that changed the world. I love how this book reclaimed the phrase, “like a girl”, and gave it a positive spin. It does an excellent job of showing some of the women who have made their mark on history as well as inspiring a new generation.
Nice variety of women represented. From those who served their communities to those who broke through boundaries of racism and sexism, from those who followed their dreams to those who found their own way to express themselves. There are those we all read about in history books, those who have been long overlooked, and modern marvels. An inspirational selection of remarkable women.
The illustrations are phenomenal. I love Mara Penny’s use of muted colors, patterns, and textures. She plants little details about the women featured into her art, which acted as fun Easter eggs to be on the lookout for.
At the end of the book, there’s a short bio for each woman which gives information on their lives and what they are best known for. This serves as a nice starting point for learning about these amazing women. The book also includes a short Additional Reading section of recommended reads.
Rhythmic, inspirational, and gorgeous, this is an excellent way for young readers to learn more about a few women who have had an impact on the world.
