To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the Wild West aesthetic, but I love retellings and have a special spot in my heart for the worlds Shannon Hale creates. So I had no idea what I was in for with this book.
By the end though, I really enjoyed the story. The old West twist worked well and I was so caught up in the action and characters that I really didn’t mind the feel. It was a creative touch that added another layer to the magical elements of the book.
Rapunzel’s backstory was fascinating and I really enjoyed the retelling. From there, it’s a whole new adventure with Rapunzel taking on various troubles with her lasso-like braids and a fierce determination to right wrongs.
While the art style wasn’t my favorite, it brought the story to life and was overall enjoyable. There is so much packed into this book: adventure, mystery, romance, humor, revenge, justice, and imaginative plays on classic fairy tales. I loved the mashup of characters and genres. It worked really well to create a unique and fun read.
I really enjoyed Rapunzel’s character and am interested in reading the sequel to see what’s in store for her and Jack.
