I work with kids. That means I’m constantly crawling on the floor, giving horsey rides, squatting behind couches during games of hide-and-seek, doing monster-crawls on my knees, and otherwise wrecking havoc on my jeans. Therefore, I get a lot of holes in my pants. I used to just buy a new “nice” pair, but inevitably, the same thing would happen. I get a hole in the knee and the cycle would start all over. Now I have a pile of jeans with holes in them. But with some basic sewing skills and some scrap fabric, you can fix the holes with a nifty patch.

When I patch my jeans, I like to sew an inner patch first and then make a cool-looking outer patch. Here is the tutorial for the inner patch.

Supplies:

  • Holey jeans
  • Thread
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Scrap fabric (I usually use pieces from other projects- mostly T-shirts)

Note: If you are planning on putting a patch on the outside of the jeans, then the color of the fabric you use on the inside isn’t really important. Whatever you put on the outside will cover up anything that would be visible through the hole.

1. Turn the jeans inside out and locate the hole from the inside.

2. Cut a piece of scrap fabric so that it completely covers the hole.

3. Sew around the edges of the fabric. The shape is up to you. I usually make some sort of square/rectangle, but here I chose a jellybean shape.

4. Cut off any loose ends and turn the pants back right-side out. Now you are ready to make some outer patches.
