Stamping is a fun, versatile activity that is enjoyable for both kids and adults. You can make all sorts of artwork, including cards, bookmarks, and decor. It is a great activity I utilize when I’m babysitting. Kids have fun making their own stamps and using them to create their own masterpieces.

Here is a way to do some simple upcycling and make your own personalized stamps.

Supplies:

  • Styrofoam containers (take out containers work well)
  • Scissors
  • Pen

1. To prep the containers, be sure they are thoroughly washed. Then cut the bottoms off.

2. Remove any extra lip areas around the edges so that you have a completely flat piece.

3. Repeat on all of the containers.

4. To make the stamp, take one flat piece of Styrofoam and think of the design you want to make. If should be simple enough for you to draw, with not too much small detail.

5. Using the pen, draw out the design, making sure there are deep indents in the Styrofoam along the lines you want to appear in your stamp.

6. To use the stamp, simply coat with paint…

7. … press firmly onto paper…

8. … and remove.

9. You can also cut the design out to make the stamps different shapes.

Get creative!

To clean, just wipe with a damp paper towel or rag and reuse.

Tracing Variation

You can also use coloring books, magazines, or pictures to trace designs onto your stamps. Note: be sure there is not too much small detail in your design, because it will not show up cleanly.

Supplies:

  • Coloring book or other picture to trace
  • Pen
  • Styrofoam

1. Place the picture on top of the Styrofoam on the side you want your design to appear. Carefully trace over the picture with the pen, applying firm pressure.

2. When you’re done, a faint indentation should appear on the surface of the Styrofoam. Go over the indentations with the pen to deepen the lines.

3. Proceed as before by painting…

4. …pressing…

5. …and revealing your creation.

There are so many ways to make fun, creative stamps. Figure out what works for you and enjoy.

Happy crafting!
