Given the short length of this book, I wasn’t sure how developed it would be. My worries were unfounded because Soontornvat has done it again. This is a to-the-point story with beautiful world building, great characters, and fantastic messages.
Plum is content living with her grandparents on Little Island. But when she’s accepted into the Guardian Academy on Lotus Island, her life is turned upside down. While learning what it means to be a Guardian and trying to discover her animal form, Plum also faces unexpected friendships, animosity from those who think she doesn’t belong, and a mysterious connection to the mother she doesn’t remember.
I really enjoyed this story. Because of the pace, it pulls the reader in immediately. It also deals with themes of temptation, classism, connection to the natural world, friendship, challenging preconceived notions, and bullying.
The black-and-white illustrations are wonderful. I really enjoyed the art style. They pair nicely with the story and help break up the text.
The book ends in a satisfying way that also sets up the next book in the series. Soontornvat provides a perfect balance of providing answers while also giving hints that there is more the reader doesn’t know. Definitely will be reading the next book to continue Plum’s journey, find out more about the mysterious temple, and learn about Plum’s family’s past.
