Delightfully spooky.
An unexpectedly sweet story featuring an old house in the woods, a skull, and a brave girl looking for a place to stay. After running away from home, Otilla comes across a house whose sole occupant is a kindly skull. Little does she know, the skull has a secret and that secret is coming tonight.
On odd little book that is definitely worth the read. Reads a bit like an early chapter book. Heavily illustrated using muted colors in classic Klassen fashion. I loved the interplay between the text and the pictures.
Simply told, this dark little story works in themes of helping others, creative thinking, and friendship.
Includes an Author’s Note at the end, which was actually quite interesting. I enjoyed Klassen’s perspective on folktales and the power to change them as they are retold. I personally really enjoyed Klassen’s ending for this one.
I haven’t read much from Klassen, but this one was a pleasant surprise. Works wonderfully for kids who want something a little spooky and weird. A unique and interesting read.
