What a fantastic read. I checked this out from the library, but will probably buy a copy at some point because it is a great resource to reference over time.

This book can be read chapter by chapter or as a reference for issues of concern as they come up. It contains a vast amount of information such as basic anatomy, pregnancy, trans issues, maintenance, menopause, medications, STIS, conditions, and symptoms. One of the things I liked most about this book was Gunter’s focus on empowering women with knowledge about their bodies, how to evaluate product’s claims, and how to talk to their health care providers. There is so much useful information in this book, especially in helping consumers look out for the unscientific and unregulated claims of companies and products. This book emphasizes being an informed consumer and how it can save you money, stress, and potentially harmful side effects.

I also really liked Gunter’s style of writing. It was a great balance of casual friendliness while still coming across as professional, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. It also didn’t feel judge-y. Gunter makes recommendations based on her own research and experience with patients (and herself). She is strongly against misinformation and disinformation and instead works to provide accurate, helpful information, rather than judging women. She can be candid at times and makes a few jokes, but her main goal is to provide good information, not make women feel bad.

Her advise was also helpful in discussing conditions and treatments in terms of expenses and mental stress, which can take a huge toll on many women. This is a book for all women, not just those who can afford expensive treatments. When possible, Gunter gives various options for testing and treatment and points out their uses, accuracy, success rate, side effects, and relative expense.

One of the sections I found most interesting was the “Journal of Old Wives’ Tales”, which chronicles various claims regarding women’s health from jade eggs and tightening sticks to the effects of zinc and iodine. It was interesting to read about some of the various products and theories and watch Gunter expertly debunk them.

Amazing read that is entertaining, informative, and empowering.
