An adorable picture book about inclusion, acceptance, and not making assumptions about others. When a flamboyance of flamingos moves into the neighborhood, the other birds are upset by their bright colors and bold appearances. Finally, they decide to confront them. But when they arrive, they see their new neighborhoods are not what they expected.

Throughout, readers learn different words for gatherings of certain birds such as an unkindness of ravens, a squadron of pelicans, a pandemonium of parrots, and a pride of peacocks. Fun wordplay and wonderful lessons about not judging others instead of getting to know them, challenging preconceived notions, and accepting others even if they are different from you.

I love that the flamingos are just being themselves and help make their new home more comfortable for themselves and others.. They don’t change their behavior or dull their shine to fit in or make others comfortable around them. Instead, they create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome.

The artwork was really fun. Great visuals. Loved the way each bird’s personality shines through.

At the back is a list of additional words for groups of birds and a note from the author about the importance of diversity and challenging assumptions that can lead to discrimination.

A fun read with great messages.
