Illustrated by Soofiya
5 stars
A fantastic read that is educational, supportive, affirming, and inclusive. What a great book. Dawson brings a touch a humor to a topic that can often be scary, stressful, and frustrating. She also offers advice and support along the way.
While the book is targeted toward teens and young adults who are nonbinary, trans, or figuring out their gender identity, as well as parents and caregivers, it’s a really helpful guide for other readers in the LGBTQ community and cisgender readers alike. It goes through a lot of terms and corrects misinformation. It also shares various experiences from Dawson herself as well as other trans, nonbinary, genderfluid, and intersex people on gender euphoria and dysphoria, gender affirming care, and living under the trans umbrella. A really helpful book for anyone.
At the end of each chapter is a Transgender Hall of Fame page with a short profile on a famous trans person throughout history.
The text is nicely broken up with great artwork from Soofiya. They add to the overall humor of the book and pair well with the messages and information.
There is also a specific section for parents and caregivers with some advice and questions to ask in order to support their child.
At the end of the book there is a list of organizations for further information and support, recommended reads, a glossary of terms, references, and an index.
An informative book that is presented in an entertaining and fun way, making for an engaging read.
