This is the second book in the Zoey and Sassafras series. The book starts out with a short prologue basically explaining the concept of the series. Because of this, the first book does not necessarily have to be read in order to enjoy this one, however it is helpful in understanding the events leading up to this adventure.
In this one, Zoey meets a monster with a mold problem and uses experiments to determine the best solution. A fun read that gives a nice, simple look at the scientific method in action and the procedures of experimentation.
As with the first book, the black-and-white illustrations really add to the story. Nicely breaks up the chapters and pairs well with the text. I loved the detail in them.
I also especially liked how Zoey’s mother took a backseat role, there to help her and give her hints without solving the problem for her. There is also an emphasis on perseverance and trying something else when a solution doesn’t work.
This is a great series to expose readers to scientific concepts without feeling like they are being taught something. Fun and interesting. This unique book is wonderful for fostering interest in and a love of science in young readers.
Also includes a simple glossary at the end with terms such as hypothesis, preservative, and mold.
